Although central Florida’s enviable climate keeps it a popular destination year-round, permanent residents know that regular sun exposure can result in frustrating discoloration or changes to skin’s pigment and tone. Intense pulsed light, or IPL, treatments are exceedingly popular with our patients from Melbourne, Viera, and other Brevard County, Florida, communities who wish to undo the damage caused by years of beach days.
In addition to correcting discoloration and pigment IPL is a great option for hair removal. Depending on your skin type, IPL hair removal treatments can be extremely beneficial. The removal of unwanted hair can take up to six sessions depended on the area treated, with intervals of six to eight weeks between each session.
We offer laser hair removal for the following areas:
Arms
Underarms
Back
Chest
Bikini area
Face
Legs

IPL is different than a laser treatment because it doesn’t resurface or exfoliate the skin, a common process called ablation. Instead, IPL uses directed light to target irregularities in pigment. Extra pigment, found in hair dark spots and redness, absorbs the light and scatters into very small particles. The pigment eventually disappears as the skin heals itself. IPL is an effective way to treat the following concerns:
Red or brown blotches
Freckles
Melasma
Rosacea
Broken blood vessels
Certain light scars
What to Expect
Each IPL appointment is typically brief, usually about 30 minutes. A cooling, conductive gel will be applied to your skin during your treatment. The IPL handpiece is then directed over your skin, emitting light to your primary areas of concern. During this time, you may experience a prickly sensation, a sting, or even a pinch, but these sensations are brief. Most patients find the IPL treatment comfortable.
Although you’ll be physically able to return to work or other daily activities immediately after your treatment, you may wish to rest at home for the remainder of the day, because your skin will likely be a bit red or swollen. Throughout the coming days, you may notice your freckles and discoloration temporarily darken. This is a normal, short-lived effect, and you’ll soon notice an improvement in your complexion. During this time, you should also take extra care to protect your skin from the sun by using a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and staying indoors during the midday hours.
We often recommend a series of treatments, spaced several weeks apart, although this approach isn’t necessary for everyone. During your consultation, we’ll go over our treatment recommendations and help you understand exactly how you can get the results you want. In some cases, IPL can be a wonderful complement to other non-surgical services, such as injectable fillers or BOTOX® Cosmetic.
